Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then located many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests suggest the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
An important political figure said the attack left him stunned and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
