Colombian Leader Says 'I Would Resort to Weapons Once More' if American Forces Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with Colombia's president have escalated the volume of their war of words, increasing tensions between the two countries after American military units targeted Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He runs narcotics facilities and cocaine factories and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Growing Rhetoric and Accusations

Talking to reporters over the weekend, Trump threatened similar military action against Bogotá, claiming Colombia faces serious problems and “run by a sick man who likes making narcotics and selling it to the United States."

Although Colombia stands as the leading cocaine-producing country, there is no evidence linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the business.

A Frayed Alliance

This nation was historically a staunch collaborator of Washington in the fight against narcotics trade and enjoyed wide political approval in Washington, yet ties have deteriorated dramatically following Trump assumed the presidency.

Its illicit drug economy is largely controlled by illegal armed groups including the Golf Clan, the ELN guerrilla group and breakaway groups of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members laid down arms subsequent to a landmark accord.

Colombia's Defiant Answer

When asked if military intervention similar to Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump said: "I like the sound of that from my perspective."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who disarmed decades ago, firmly denied the accusations. "I am no illegitimate and I am not a drug trafficker," he affirmed.

"The US president speaks without information. End the false accusations," he wrote in a post.

"Should American forces attack peasants, they will transform into a multitude of fighters in the hills. If they capture the nation's leader, which a significant portion of the country holds in high esteem, they will release the powerful force of the populace," Petro warned.

From Insurgent to President

He passed some years as a young man participating with the radical M-19 insurgent movement though it is believed to have ever participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he participated in creating the nation's constitution over three decades ago and eventually served as an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá before being elected the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow to never again hold arms again ... but in defense of my country I shall resume arms again," he affirmed.

Reinforced Protection and Cross-Political Rejection

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the president’s personal security had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, however, leaders from across Colombian politics have rejected the notion of an invasion on Colombia.

Bilateral and Financial Sanctions

American authorities revoked the president's entry visa following he urged US troops to disobey orders that violate law. Months later, the US enacted economic restrictions targeting Petro, his wife and several associates.

Concurrently the US was building up its troop levels near Venezuela and bombing vessels thought to carry drugs to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces also carried out operations against vessels off the Pacific coast near Colombia.
